FIREARM LICENSING AND COMPETENCY PROCESS
At Gun Smart, we've made the process of obtaining firearm licenses and demonstrating competency straightforward. Here's a simplified breakdown:
1. Apply for Firearm License
-
To possess a firearm legally, you must obtain a specific firearm license from the South African Police Service (SAPS). Each license is tied to a particular firearm and its serial number.
2. Competency Training
-
Prospective firearm owners need to complete proficiency training at an accredited center. This training covers essential knowledge about firearm laws and practical tests for specific firearm types.
-
Training includes understanding the Firearms Control Act 60 of 2000 and practical usage of firearms like handguns, rifles, shotguns, etc.
3. SAPS Competency Certificate
-
After proficiency training, apply for a SAPS Competency Certificate by submitting the SAPS517 form and required documents to your local Designated Firearms Officer (DFO).
-
If you already have a SAPS Competency Certificate for some unit standards and want more, apply for Further Competency.
-
For applicants under 21, follow a similar process but include proof of active participation in hunting and/or sport shooting.
4. Apply for Firearm License
-
Once you have a SAPS Competency Certificate, you can apply for a firearm license card. First, acquire the specific firearm(s) you want to license from a licensed dealer, private owner, or estate.
-
Fill out the SAPS271 form and submit it, along with a detailed motivation and supporting documents, to your local DFO.
5. General Information
-
All applications must be submitted in person at your nearest SAPS station.
-
Contact your local SAPS station to find out when they accept applications.
-
Certify all supporting documents before submission.
-
Do not bind documents.
-
Keep in mind that your DFO may rearrange documents upon submission.
At Gun Smart, we're here to assist you with any questions or guidance you need during the licensing and competency process.
